4th Annual Keiki Catch In this tournament, the emphasis is focused on our youths of the community and its relationship with the ocean. Both boys and girls are welcome, if you don't have a child, you may "adopt" one for the day. Uncles, aunties, guardians, and even grandparents are welcome too. May Day May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii! May Day is a special occasion which began in 1927 to celebrate the aloha spirit of Hawaii Nei. Lanai honors this day with entertainment from Lanai’s own, Lanai High & Elementary School Students. Come learn the culture of the islands. Also, a lei is a garland made of flowers presented to someone as a token of welcome of farewell, followed by a kiss. Theme to be provided at a later date. Lanai's Annual Surf Clinic This surf clinic is for community members who don't know how to surf and would like to learn. This is a starting point for those of you who would like to enter the Surfing Competition in the Summer of 2007. Open to children and adults of the community. An adult must accompany children. 16th Annual Pineapple Festival This Annual event will celebrate the islands rich pineapple plantation and ranch history. Residents and visitors will enjoy. Obon Dance Obon is celebrated wherever Japanese Buddhists gather, Obon is a time to remember and cherish the dead by laying food, incense and flowers on altars and lighting lanterns, so their spirits are welcomed home. Offerings are made at the temple and a dance is conducted outdoors with Kumi Daiko drummers. Dancers dance under a tower of lights decorated with paper lanterns, bamboo and colored paper flowers. The Lanai Hongwanji invites everyone to join the celebration by dancing with them or be a spectator and enjoy the fun. Sushi, saimin and chow fun will be sold at food booth.
